Quick answer

Overtime is usually 1.5× your hourly wage for hours over 40 in a week. At $20 an hour, overtime pays $30/hour, so 5 overtime hours adds $150 on top of your $800 regular pay — $1,025 total. Enter your own numbers above.

How overtime works

Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, most hourly workers earn 1.5 times their regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. Your overtime rate is your wage × the multiplier (1.5 for time and a half, 2 for double time). Multiply that by your overtime hours and add it to your regular pay. Some states add daily overtime rules on top of the weekly one.

Common questions

How is overtime pay calculated?

Overtime is usually paid at 1.5 times your regular hourly wage ("time and a half"). Multiply your hourly rate by 1.5, then by the number of overtime hours. For example, $20 an hour becomes $30 for overtime, so 5 overtime hours is $150.

When do I get overtime?

Under US federal law (the FLSA), most hourly employees earn overtime for hours worked over 40 in a week. Some states, such as California, also require overtime after 8 hours in a single day — check your state rules.

What is double time?

Some jobs pay 2× the regular rate ("double time") for holidays or very long shifts. Change the multiplier field to 2 to calculate it.

Is overtime taxed more?

No. Overtime is taxed at the same rates as regular pay. It can look like more was withheld because the higher weekly total is annualized by payroll, but the tax rate itself does not change. See the paycheck calculator for take-home pay.
