| Regular | $0.00 |
| Overtime (1.5×) | $0.00 |
| Total pay | $0.00 |
Hours are shown in decimal form (the format payroll uses): 30 minutes is 0.50. Overtime is pay over your weekly threshold at 1.5× — check your state's rules, as some use daily overtime.
Quick answer
To total a week's hours, subtract each day's start time from its end time, take off unpaid breaks, and add the days together. A full-time week of 8 hours a day, 5 days is 40 hours. Enter your own times above and this calculator does the maths, including overtime over 40 hours.
How to read your hours
Payroll uses decimal hours, not hours and minutes. The "Hours" column converts for you, but here is the quick guide:
| Minutes | Decimal | Minutes | Decimal |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 min | 0.25 | 45 min | 0.75 |
| 20 min | 0.33 | 50 min | 0.83 |
| 30 min | 0.50 | 60 min | 1.00 |
How overtime works
Under federal law, most hourly employees earn 1.5 times their regular wage for hours worked over 40 in a week. Enter your hourly wage above and the calculator splits your pay into regular and overtime. Some states, such as California, also require daily overtime after 8 hours — this tool uses the weekly rule, so adjust if your state differs.
Common questions
How do I calculate my work hours?
Subtract your start time from your end time for each day, take off any unpaid break, then add the days together. This calculator does it for you — type your start and end times and it shows the total in decimal hours, which is what payroll uses.
How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?
Divide the minutes by 60. For example, 30 minutes is 0.5 hours and 15 minutes is 0.25 hours. So 8 hours and 30 minutes is 8.5 hours.
When does overtime start?
Under federal law, most hourly workers earn overtime at 1.5 times their rate for hours over 40 in a week. Enter your hourly wage and the calculator splits your pay into regular and overtime.
Does it handle overnight shifts?
Yes. If your end time is earlier than your start time — for example 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM — the calculator treats it as an overnight shift and counts 8 hours.
