How your paycheck is taxed
Everyone who earns wages in the US pays three federal taxes, whichever state they live in:
| Tax | 2026 rate | Applies to |
|---|---|---|
| Federal income tax | 10% to 37% | Income above the standard deduction |
| Social Security | 6.2% | Wages up to $184,500 |
| Medicare | 1.45% | All wages, plus 0.9% above $200,000 |
On top of that, most states take their own income tax. The states below do not, so your take-home pay is higher there.

Common questions
What is a paycheck calculator?
A paycheck calculator estimates your take-home pay — what lands in your bank account after taxes and deductions. You enter your salary or hourly wage, pay frequency and filing status, and it works out federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare and any state income tax.
How much of my paycheck goes to taxes?
For most workers, federal income tax takes 10% to 22% of pay, Social Security takes 6.2% (up to $184,500 in 2026) and Medicare takes 1.45%. The exact share depends on your income, filing status and state.
Which states have no income tax?
Nine states do not tax wages: Texas, Florida, Tennessee, Nevada, Washington, Wyoming, South Dakota, Alaska and New Hampshire. In those states only federal taxes come out of your paycheck.
